Final STRICE results open to the general public

The final results of the STRICE project which are available to the general public are published on this web site.

To facilitate further exploitation of STRICE results this web site has been completely updated. It now features substantially revised and new sections - especially

This web site will be kept live and updated to inform on future interesting STRICE post-project and exploitation activities and new STRICE-related topics when available.

STRICE Team met with ISO Technical Panel on Ice

On January 23, 2003 STRICE presented results to the Technical Panel on Ice (ISO TC67 SC7 TG8 Techn. Panel TP2b_Ice) at VTT in Espoo, Finland. At present the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) elaborates an Arctic Offshore Structures Standard. Data, results, methods and findings from the STRICE project are of high relevance for the formulation of this standard.

The meeting took place in conjunction with a weekend conference of the Technical Panel with participants from Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Japan, Norway, Russia, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States.

The STRICE project ended officially

The STRICE project closed out with its funded phase end of December 2003.

However, the project partners will conduct considerable post-project activities in particular towards further exploitation, dissemination and transfer of the project results for a longer period of time.

Working and co-ordinating groups accomplish the final reports and deliverables within January and February 2004 and will certainly continue to cooperate closely in other and affiliated activities.

Impressions from the ice season 2003

A new series of photos, videos and related research information about the measurement activities in STRICE during the ice season 2003 are published here.

STRICE session on POAC'03 and last STRICE project meeting

The final STRICE project meeting took place in Trondheim (Norway), June 19-20, 2003 following the 17th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions - POAC'03.

POAC'03 was organised under the presidentship of the International POAC Committee and chairmanship of the Local Organising Committee of STRICE partner Prof. Sveinung Løset of NTNU. POAC'03 focussed thematically "Applied Ice Engineering in the Offshore Region" and incorporated a special session on the STRICE project. Read more on POAC'03, participation of STRICE teams and download their publications.

On this project meeting intermediate results and status of the work was presented and decisions were taken towards completion of the project's deliverables and work by end of the year 2003.

STRICE measurements schedule completed

With end of the ice season 2003 the STRICE measurements on the Lighthouse Norstrømsgrund in the Gulf of Bothnia (Northern Baltic Sea) throughout the winter and spring seasons 2003 the STRICE measurement cycles were completed.

The last data acquisition period on the lighthouse started on February 13, 2003 and ended middle of April 2003. The quite unusual cold weather in Northern Scandinavia already during middle of November 2002 gave opportunity to acquire very versatile data. Harsher ice conditions occurred due to the strong cooling of the Northern Baltic Sea during this year's winter with earlier freezing of the Gulf of Bothnia. Thus up to 70 centimetres thick level ice could be observed in the area.

Furthermore, STRICE measurements on ridge mechanical properties were conducted on the Finnish side of the Gulf of Bothnia from February 24 to March 21, 2003 involving new methods of full-scale testing of ice mechanical properties.

All research teams are at present heavily engaged in evaluating the field and full-scale data and accordingly accomplish their research work until the end of this year.

STRICE Meeting and Mid-term Review in Espoo (Finland)

A STRICE project meeting was held at VTT in Espoo (Finland) from November 14th to 18th, 2002. Project partners reported on progress in data evaluation and prepared for the forthcoming research work and especially the measurement campaigns in winter and spring 2003.

The project's mid-term review was conducted verifying that the project is well on schedule and in good progress. Furthermore, members of the STRICE Advisory Board from Canada, Germany and Russia provided versatile scientific support to the project

Second schedule of STRICE measurements completed

In the period of February to April 2002 the second measurement campaigns within the STRICE project were conducted on the Lighthouse Norstrømsgrund in the Gulf of Bothnia (Northern Baltic Sea). Co-ordinated by Peter Jochmann of HSVA who once more endured most of the time on the lighthouse, ice forces and other relevant parameters were acquired.

HSVA's staff was supported by colleagues from the project partners, CU, LUT, HYDROMOD, NTNU, and VTT as well as by guest scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Marine and Polar Research (AWI) and the Canadian Hydraulics Centre (CNRC-CHC) who joined in temporarily.

In addition HUT undertook ice measurements focussing on ridge mechanical properties in the Finnish side of the Gulf of Bothnia.

STRICE Meeting in Hamburg (Germany)

A STRICE project meeting was held at HSVA in Hamburg from September 18th to 20th, 2001. Project partners reported on progress in data evaluation and prepared for the forthcoming measurement campaigns in winter and spring 2001 / 2002.

STRICE on POAC 2001

Several researchers in the STRICE project participated in the 16th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions - POAC 01 at the University of Ottawa (Canada) from August 12 to 17, 2001.

In conjunction with final results from the LOLEIF project which caused great interest also progress so far made in the STRICE project was presented.

A STRICE Working Meeting was also held in the frame of this conference.

First schedule of STRICE measurements completed

From February 24, 2001 STRICE measurements were conducted on the Lighthouse Norstrømsgrund in the Gulf of Bothnia (Northern Baltic Sea).

Peter Jochmann of HSVA endured on the lighthouse for a period of 77 days to register ice forces, other relevant parameters and observations. He was supported by colleagues from LUT, HUT, and VTT who joined in temporarily.

Since January 2001 the STRICE Project is operative

The STRICE Kick-off Meeting was combined with the Final LOLEIF project meeting and took place on April 26/27, 2001 at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway.
