OPCOM is an EU funded Research & Development Project* which aims at improving methods and techniques for continuous monitoring and forecasting of coastal waters. OPCOM takes advantage of the experience acquired by individual project partners using existing coastal zone models (namely for the Elbe estuary, the Bay of Marennes-Oléron, the Tagus estuary and the Finnish Archipelago Sea). The project strives also to incorporate advice from the user community and looks at such diverse management objectives like environmental monitoring for the protection of oyster farms or the provision of up-to-date hydrographic forecasting for ship routing. The OPCOM consortium consists of seven organisations from Germany, France, Portugal, and Finland.

* Partially being funded by the European Commission under the DG XII MAST Programme (MAS3-CT97-0089)
