Trials of Non-standard Sensors
This report on application of so called "non-standard sensors" installed in Ferrybox systems gives
details on applications and achieved experiences with a variety of sensors for instance to measure
currents, oxygen, pH, concentrations of different nutrients as well as to demarcate algae groups.
This report also illustrates the potential of Ferryboxes when additionally configured
with advanced sensors and outlines how new measuring technologies and sensors presently developed
to operational stages can be installed in and used with Ferrybox systems.

Management of Ferrybox Data
|
Updated: 2006-04-21
|
|
Guidelines for Management of Ferrybox Data
This document describes the handling, merging and assembly of the Ferrybox data acquired in the
project. It also intends to provide guidelines and information on how Ferrybox data can be consistently
handled, associated with quality flags and documented with comprehensive meta data.
It also intends to provide information on data handling and management to interested users and
operators of Ferryboxes.
The FerryBox project data will be merged and assembled according to these guidelines
in a consistent data set (the so called Final FerryBox Dataset) which will be
soon made available to interested users and institutions for non-commercial use upon request.

Applications of Ferrybox Systems and Data
|
Updated: 2006-04-21
|
|
Eutrophication
This report summarises the application of Ferrybox systems and data for determination and
evaluation of eutrophication processes in marine environments. This and the subsequent reports also
summarise information which is further refined in an associated publication series which is
presently in advanced preparation stage.

Sediment Transport
This report describes the possibilities and experiences for determination of sediment transport
processes, rates and morphology changes derived from acoustic current profiling (currents and acoustic
backscatter) measured with ADP or ADCP systems) as applied in the project by NIOZ in the hydro-
and morphodynamically highly active and variable Dutch Wadden Sea.

Water Mass Movement
This report illustrates how Ferrybox data can contribute to identification and assessments of water masses
and associated transport processes. It gives examples on how for instance movement of frontal systems
and their relation to eutrophication and productivity or mixing and cooling processes during and after
storm events can be investigated with the help of Ferrybox data.

Process Understanding in Different Dynamical Regimes
This report illustrates how Ferrybox data can contribute to the understanding of complex
hydro-, thermodynamic and biogeochemical processes in different dynamical regimes and areas.
Part I gives examples are given on fresh and estuarine water intrusion and mixing
in coastal areas, tidal advection and sediment fluxes, coastal upwelling, air-sea interaction
processes and linkage between physical, chemical and biological processes.
In Part II further assessments are described which combine Ferrybox data with process
investigations conducted with numerical models. These were applied for understanding the
role of advection in conjunction with Ferrybox data, spatial extents and representativeness
of Ferrybox measurements as well as to investigate spatial and temporal variability.

Remote Sensing
This report describes how Ferrybox measurements can contribute to validate satellite data and to improve
in-time availability and quality of satellite remotely sensed data products. Examples are given
for AVHRR, MODIS and MERIS satellite data. Calibration measures, relations of Ferrybox and satellite
data are described and comparisons are given for the different areas crossed by the 9 ferry routes.

Updated: 2006-04-21
|
|
Existing Data Assimilation Schemes for Use with Ferrybox Data
This report introduces existing data assimilation schemes for numerical models and how these
are suitable and can be used in conjunction with Ferrybox data. Following the introduction and description
of different assimilation methods (e.g. Kalman filters, statistical error methods) applications
with a model of the Irish Sea operated by NERC.POL and the Greek Poseidon model operated by HCMR are
given.

Value of Assimilatied FerryBox Data for Numerical Modelling
This report quantifies the value of assimilating Ferrybox data into pre-operational models.
Therefore case and comparative model studies have been conducted with the aforementioned models of
the Irish Sea and the Mediterranean Sea to determine and quantify how the assimilated Ferrybox data
contribute to improvements of the quality of model results and forecasts.

An estimate of costs and benefits of Ferrybox systems for scientific applications
and use in operational oceanography.
This study provides information on the purchase and operation costs of Ferryboxes
as obtained during cumulatively 18 years of routine operation on 9 different ferry routes
as well on benefits for scientific applications and in marine environmental monitoring.
It also includes a review on 2 commercially available Ferrybox systems and provides foreseeable trends of
development and utilisation of Ferrybox systems.
The Annex of this study gives further details on Ferrybox applications
during the FerryBox project as well as in affiliated and spin-off activities.
