The Finnish Environment Institute (FEI) is the national environmental research and development centre of the environmental administration. Research and development in the FEI deals with changes in the environment, cause and effect relationships, means of resolving environmental problems and effects of policy measures. We are the national environmental information centre and we provide expert services and take care of certain national and international statutory tasks.

PRIORITY AREAS

Research and development in the FEI deals with a wide range of environmental issues. For 2000-2003 the following areas have been assigned as priorities:

  • water protection - controlling eutrophication
  • atmospheric change - management of emissions and effects
  • biological diversity - enhancement of research and monitoring
  • wastes and contaminated soils - procedures and techniques
  • industrial activities - towards eco-efficiency
  • water resources management - sustainable use of water resources
Hydrology and Water Management Division (active in EUROLAKES) is experienced, among other things, in hydrological modelling maintaining and developing a fully automatic and real-time watershed model system covering about 85% of the whole area of Finland. The Division is responsible for operational management of some of the largest lakes in Finland. Hydrodynamic modelling, dam safety and lake restoration are some of the key areas.
